Reduce your risk for heart disease — one taste at a time

Posted: Monday, Jan 28th, 2013

Dr. Karl Blessinger demonstrates how to prepare a heart-healthy entree while 2012 Go Red attendees watch and taste. This year’s Go Red event is planned Feb. 21 at the Campus Center.

In celebration of the American Heart Association’s “Go Red” movement, Huron Regional Medical Center is hosting an evening of fun featuring free health screenings, a cooking demonstration, healthful food and wine tastings and an informational presentation on Thursday, Feb. 21, from 4:30 to 7 p.m., at the Campus Center.

Heart disease is the number one killer of women. While one in 36 women will die from breast cancer, one in three American women dies of a heart attack or stroke, according to the American Heart Association. Unfortunately though, one-third of women underestimate their risk for heart disease. To help women learn how to reduce their heart disease risks, HRMC is hosting “Go Red … Taste for Your Heart.”

“Our goal is to create an enjoyable event where women can have some fun while learning how to prevent heart disease,” said Kim Rieger, vice president of marketing for HRMC. “We know that people are busy, so this is a come and go event where you can come whatever time works in your schedule and stay as long as you are able.”

Women are invited to wear their favorite red outfit and browse interactive health displays and free health screenings each featuring a “taste” of food prepared in a healthier way. Other features include:

• 5:15 p.m. — Heart-healthy cooking demonstration by Dr. Karl Blessinger, HRMC pathologist

• 6:15 p.m. — Could it happen to you? Information on women-specific risks and symptoms and how to prevent heart disease by Dr. Akash Taggarse, internist and gerontologist with Tschetter & Hohm Clinic

Wine tasting, along with information on the heart-healthy benefits, by the SD Wine Growers Association. Wine may also be purchased by the glass or bottle.

The booths will be organized around the American Heart Association’s “Life’s Simple 7TM.” The program advocates seven simple steps for reducing your risk and preventing heart disease including managing your blood pressure, cholesterol and blood glucose, eating better, getting active, losing weight and quitting smoking.

Each of the recipes presented at the “Go Red … Taste for Your Heart” will be compiled along with other heart-healthy recipes and substitutions and given to each attendee in a commemorative recipe book. Attendees will also have a chance to win one of several great prizes to help them get and stay healthy.

Advance tickets are available until Feb. 15 for $5 at HRMC information desks or online at www.huronregional.org/gored. After Feb. 15 and at the event tickets will cost $10. More information about preventing heart disease is available on HRMC’s website at ww.huronregional.org or online at www.americanheart.org.
