Iroquois second graders celebrated Laura Ingalls Wilder’s birthday on Feb. 7. During the morning, guest reader Kathy Aughenbaugh read from “The Long Winter.” The children studied from old textbooks and primers and learned how to crochet. They also viewed and held historical items found in a trunk. The afternoon was filled with pioneer activities. Students ground wheat into flour, churned cream into butter and made rope from twine. Linda Perry baked homemade whole-wheat bread for the children to eat with their churned butter. This multigenerational celebration included older student helpers Andrew Borgan, Rachel Schoenfelder and Emily Schortzmann, as well as many parents and grandparents. Second grade is taught by Mary Wienbar.
