Iroquois woman named national American Legion officer

A U.S. Army veteran from Iroquois assumed a national leadership position today in the 2.4-million member American Legion, the nationís largest veterans organization.

Charemon Dunham was appointed Aug. 29 as the National Historian of The American Legion during the 95th national convention in Houston, Texas.

From 1974 to 1976, she served in the Army at Fort Jackson, S.C.; Fort Benjamin Harrison, Ind.; and Fort Belvoir, Va.

A 1979 graduate of the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, she served at Fort Benjamin Harrison; Fort Carson, Colo.; West Germany; Fort Leavenworth, Kan.; and Pittsburgh during her service from 1979 to 2000.

A member of the American Legion since 2001, she has been the Kingsbury County Commander and held numerous positions at Iroquois Post 280, including Commander.

At the state level, she was the Department Historian from 1998-2008 and 2012-2013. She is a 2004 graduate of the National American Legion College. She is currently serving on the National American Legion 100th Anniversary Committee.

Dunham served as president of the National Association of Department Historians of The American Legion (NADHAL) from 2007-2009, and has been a member since 1999. She is also a member of the National American Legion Press Association (NALPA) and the South Dakota American Legion Press Association.

She took the oath of office along with National Commander Dan Dellinger.

Dunham is one of 12 national officers.
