Huron area individuals and organizations were recognized for outstanding contributions to adult education by the South Dakota Association for Lifelong Learning (SDALL) on July 10.

Christina Htoo was named Student of the Year for demonstrating outstanding progress in educational development. She has been a student at Cornerstones Career Learning Center in Huron since 2011, and in that time has raised her English-language skills to the advanced level. She has served on the Student Council and, according to instructor John Taylor, “is the consummate role-model for other students. She actively participates in class by sharing her experiences and wisdom. She is willing to help any student that may need assistance with activities.”

Phyllis Lemke received the award for Volunteer of the Year. Lemke volunteers in Cornerstones Career Learning Center’s afternoon classes, where she assists instructors by supporting students during activities. Instructor Carla Newbauer said, “Phyllis has built a great relationship with the students. Her presence in our afternoon beginner class has enabled us to provide additional support to students who need more direct instruction. She shares of herself and her time, and freely gives whatever she has with the students.”

Pastor Marc Anderson accepted the Community Partner of the Year award on behalf of First Baptist Church of Huron. Cornerstones Executive Director Kim Olson said, “When English classes at Cornerstones doubled, then tripled in size, First Baptist Church unselfishly opened its doors and donated the use of its facility for our program. Pastor Marc Anderson and the First Baptist Church Board have made every effort to work with Cornerstones in providing services for our students. The church personnel make our students feel welcome and display a level of compassion, patience and understanding that is uncommon. Without First Baptist Church, we could not have afforded to provide classes on the scale that is needed in our community.”

SDALL was formed in 1966 with the mission to promote and provide professional development for adult educators in South Dakota. SDALL membership nominates individuals and organizations across South Dakota for consideration in its award categories. Winners are chosen by a committee comprised of SDALL members and are recognized at the organization’s annual awards luncheon.
