Lyle Nelson, 85, of Huron, died Thursday, July 22, 2010, at Royal C. Johnson VA Medical Center in Sioux Falls.
His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at American Lutheran Church with burial at Arlington Cemetery at Arlington, with military rites by the Huron Veterans Council.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home with family present from 5 to 7 p.m.; or Wednesday morning one hour prior to the service at the church. Visit www.welterfuneralhome.com
Lyle David Nelson was born June 14, 1925, to Fred and Olive (Griffith) Nelson in Badger. He graduated from Arlington High School in 1943.
On Nov. 19, 1943, he entered the Navy during World War II. He was honorably discharged on April 18, 1946. After he returned from the military he began working for International Harvester in Huron.
On Sept. 28, 1947, he married Delphay Madsen in Badger. They lived in Huron. He started L&L Repair as a diesel mechanic, which he owned until his retirement; then he was the coordinator for the Huron Area Senior Center Green Thumb office; a member of the Board of Directors of the Huron Area Senior Center; and for many years was the manager of the shuttle buses at the South Dakota State Fair.
He was a member of American Lutheran Church; Beadle Bums Sams Camping Club; volunteer for Meals on Wheels; Huron Eye Opener Lions Club; VFW Forrest McMullen VFW Post No. 1776; and American Legion William Reaves Post No. 7.
He enjoyed square dancing, fishing, hunting, and camping.
He is survived by a daughter, Sherry (Kevin) Kauth of Rapid City; a son, Jeff (Sherry) Nelson of Crooks; four grandchildren; a sister, Delwynne Rose of Susanville, Calif.; a brother-in-law, Larry Madsen of Huron; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Delphay on Dec. 28, 2009; two infant daughters, Sharon and Susan; an infant brother, Darrell; and a brother-in-law, Harry Rose.
