PIERRE — Melvina Sporrer, 85, of Pierre and formerly of Highmore, died Sunday, Sept. 23, 2012, at St. Mary’s Healthcare Center in Pierre.
Her funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Highmore. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery at Highmore. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today with a 7 p.m. prayer service, all at the church.
Melvina Hirsch was born Feb. 20, 1927, to Joseph and Olga (Edelmann) Hirsch at Holabird. She attended school through the eighth grade in Highmore. On Feb. 7, 1948, she married Gerald Sporrer at Seneca. She worked a majority of her life at the bowling alley in Highmore as a waitress. In 1997 she moved to Pierre to help her son run a motel. She retired in 2007. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, canning and bingo. She was an excellent seamstress.
She is survived by four children, Diane (Larry) Dassinger of Vivian, Randy (Robin) of Miller, Kevin (Susan) of Pierre and Trudy Martin of Pierre; 12 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband on May 9, 1996; a daughter, Tess Sporrer; three brothers, Elwood, LeRoy and Joseph Jr.; a sister, LaVonne; and a grandson.
