HURON — Fred Baum Jr., 94, of Huron, died Sunday, Sept. 23, 2012, at Huron Regional Medical Center.
His funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish with burial in Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Welter Funeral Home with a scripture service at 7 p.m. or one hour prior to the service. Visit welterfuneralhome.com.
Fred Julius Baum Jr. was born to Fred Sr. and Edith (Miller) Baum Aug. 8, 1918, in Beadle County. He attended Cain Creek School through the eighth grade. He started working on the family farm with his dad and was on standby during World War II.
On Oct. 19, 1940, he married Dorothy at De Smet. They began farming in 1944 south of Huron. In October 2002 his dream of opening a shooting range came true in Freddies Sporting Clays. Most recently, he enjoyed going to the river fishing, traveling and spending time at the lake watching the boats.
He is survived by a son, Michael (Lola) of Brandon; a daughter, Carol (Paul) Kappler of Huron; 10 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Ila (Mac) Haskell; and a brother, Warren.
He was preceded in death by his wife; a son, Fred; a daughter, Patricia Smidt; a grandson; and a sister, Eva Belle Schnetzer.
