MELLETTE — Four Michi-gan men died and a fifth has life-threatening injuries after an early Wednesday morning accident one mile west of Mellette in Spink County, the Highway Patrol said.
Wesley A. Frasard, 71, of St. Clair Shores, Mich., was eastbound, driving a 2003 Ford Excursion when he failed to stop at the intersection of U.S. Highway 281 and S.D. Highway 20.
The vehicle was struck by a southbound 2004 Kenworth semi-truck driven by Doug E. Carnahan, 50, of Bottineau, N.D.
Killed in the crash were Frasard and passengers Ledger J. Frasard Jr., 68, St. Clair Shores.; William E. Petrocy, 77, St. Clair Shores; and Nikolaos Andreopoulos, 69, New Baltimore, Mich.
A fifth passenger, Thomas E. Thorngate, 52, St. Clair Shores, has life-threatening injuries.
The truck driver, Carnahan, received minor injuries.
The accident happened at 5:41 a.m. Wednesday.
