HURON — James Sheffield, 58, of Huron died Monday, Nov. 19, 2012, at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls.
His memorial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the United Parish of Alpena. Memorial visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Funeral arrangements were announced by Welter Funeral Home. Visit welterfuneralhome.com
James Dean Sheffield was born July 16, 1954, in Huron, to Clayton and Eileen (Schorzman) Sheffield. He was raised on the family farm near Alpena. He graduated from Alpena High School in 1972. He graduated from the University of South Dakota with a bachelor’s degree in political science/criminal justice. He served as first assistant chief and later as chief of Campus Police in Vermillion from 1976-1991.
He married Kathy Ford. From 1991-94 he was security manager for Casino Omaha; and in 1995, he moved to Highlands Ranch, Colo., where he worked for Quest as an investigator.
In 1996, he married Mar Sternburg in Castle Rock, Colo. They moved to Brandon. After retiring from Quest in 2008, they moved to Huron where they opened Mar’s Bar and Liquor Store.
He is survived by his wife, Mar, of Huron; two sons, Jake (Liz) Sheffield of Sioux Falls, and Sam Sheffield of Vermillion; a sister, Marjean (Dallas) Moe of Huron; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Wayne Sheffield in 2002.
