PIERRE — For the second time in as many outings this season, the Huron gymnastics team flirted with claiming a victory on Tuesday during a triangular meet in Pierre.
The Tigers used a 133.950 to increase their score from their season opener on Tuesday by more than three points, but were edged by the Lady Govs, who posted a winning score of 134.300.
Stanley County rounded out the event with a 120.750.
Huron had three of the top five finishers on both the bars and beam events.
Tessa Musil turned in an 8.650 on the uneven parallel bars to finish second for the Tigers, just shy of the 8.700 routine by Melissa Bobby of Pierre. Huron’s Kelsey King was third with an 8.600, while teammate Hailey McCune was fifth at 8.300.
Jordan Waldner led the Tigers on the beam with 9.050 to finish second, with Musil following with an 8.700 and King fifth at 8.500.
Shelby Spelbring of Pierre topped the field on the beam with a 9.150.
Jessica Waldner was the top performer for Huron in the floor exercise with an 8.850 to finish tied for fourth. McCune was sixth at 8.750.
McCune used a score of 8.600 to lead the Tigers on the vault with a third-place finish. Jessica Waldner was sixth at 8.150.
King was the highest finisher for Huron in the all-around with 33.750 to finish third. McCune was fifth at 32.700.
Pierre also won the junior varsity competition with a score of 106.650.
Huron was second at 96.800, followed by Stanley County at 74.900.
The Huron JV will be at the Brookings Jamboree on Thursday, while the varsity is off until the Aberdeen Invitational on Dec. 8. For the complete article see the 11-30-2012 issue.
