Area teams win season openers

HURON — The James Valley Christian Lady Vikings battled their way to a 37-29 victory against Kimball-White Lake on Tuesday.

“It’s always nice to get the first win of the season,” JVC coach Tim Nihart said. “We made things a little too hard with some careless mistakes, but I guess we should expect that at the beginning of the year.”

Jaclyn Loban had 17 points to lead the Lady Vikings, while Tara Nihart and Hannah Loban added nine and seven points, respectively.

Betsy Nelson and Jaclyn Loban shared the rebounding honors with six boards each.

Maria Nightingale had 13 points for Kimball-White Lake.

JVC will travel to play Wessington Springs on Thursday.

DE SMET — The De Smet Lady Bulldogs opened their season with a 61-40 victory against Sioux Valley on Tuesday.

Amanda Poppen and Grayson Gruenhagen had 18 and 16 points, respectively, to lead De Smet. Kelli Aughenbaugh had eight points and Taylor Schoenfelder had seven points.

Poppen also had 13 rebounds to help the Lady Bulldogs to a 36-22 advantage on the boards.

Anna Keefe was the lone player to reach double figures for the Cossacks, with 13 points.

De Smet travels to play Dell Rapids St. Mary on Thursday.

MILLER — The Miller Rustler girls’ basketball team opened its 2012-’13 season Tuesday night with a 55-52 victory over Potter County.

The duo of Jamie Mentzer and Kristen Peterka led the Rustlers as they combined for 38 points.

Mentzer also had three assists and Peterka grabbed seven rebounds.

Jansen Hunter and Annie Fulton each grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Rustlers.

Alli Lake led Potter County with 17 points.

The Rustlers will next be in action on Saturday when they host Cheyenne-Eagle Butte.
