A local breast cancer awareness event has raised $700 to help support breast cancer awareness and detection. This is the second year Huron’s Runnings Farm & Fleet hosted a Ladies Night Out in October with breast cancer information, refreshments, door prizes and specials, and the amount of money raised is more than triple what the event raised in 2011.

“We are so pleased with the turnout and response from our community,” said Shane Hood, store manager. “From the customers to the local partners, we are just overwhelmed with the positive response — this is something we want to keep growing.”

The event was coordinated by Laura Snowden of Runnings. Members of the Huron Regional Medical Center mammography team, Donna Haigh, RT(R) (M) and Sue Hedlund, RT(R) (M) (CT), were on-hand to educate women about breast cancer prevention and detection. Shoppers could purchase a pink bag for $2 to receive a percentage off anything that would fit into it, and HRMC received $1 from each bag purchased.

New this year, Runnings employees donated a pink bucket full of items purchased in the store to be raffled to customers. The raffle raised more than $250. While at the HRMC table, shoppers could view HRMC’s Pink Glove Dance video and also vote to help the hospital in its effort to win $10,000 for breast cancer research.

“We chose to donate the proceeds to HRMC so that local residents could benefit from our efforts,” explained Hood.

The donation has been placed in a special breast cancer fund in the HRMC Foundation to be used for local prevention and detection activities. Area women who are concerned about finances when scheduling their annual mammogram should contact Haigh at 353-6246 for information about assistance options.
