Honored for saving a life

The officers with the Huron Police Department were presented 2012 Loyalty Day Awards for Safety through the South Dakota Veterans of Foreign Wars. The three were nominated for the awards by the local VFW Post 1776 for lifesaving techniques used in saving a drowning victim. The officers received certificates and plaques at the VFW meeting Wednesday at the Post home. From left, Officers Cory Borg, Mark Brueggeman and Sgt. Brandon Neitzert accept their awards from VFW Commander Ken Shoultz. On May 8 the officers responded to a report of a suicidal man on the James River bridge. Neitzert convinced the man, who was standing on the river side of the railing, to step back up onto the railing, allowing Brueggeman and Borg to get behind him and prevent him from jumping off the bridge into the water below.
