HURON — The Huron Tiger wrestling team defeated Mitchell 49-21 on Thursday at Huron Arena to remain undefeated against Eastern South Dakota Conference opponents.

“We’re right where we wanted to be heading into the break,” Huron coach Dan McCarty said. “We started the season with a win against Yankton and then beat Mitchell to go into the break.”

The Tigers opened up a 9-0 lead in Thursday’s match, as Trent Francom decisioned Briggs Havlik 6-2 at 106 pounds and Johnny Schwartz won by forfeit at 113.

Mitchell won four of the next five matches to take its only lead of the dual at 17-15. Chet Glanzer inked Huron’s lone win in the string with a pin in 17 seconds at 126.

Despite being unable to come up with victories, McCarty said that Jesse Mikrut at 120 and Nick Christiansen at 138 had big matches for the Tigers.

“They didn’t win, but they were right in those matches,” he said.

Huron then rattled off six consecutive wins, including five with pins to regain the lead and build a 49-17 advantage.

Recording pins for the Tigers were Hartman Katz at 152, Reagan Francom at 160, Bailey Schoenfelder at 170, Connor Gose at 182 and Dustin French at 220.

Thursday’s victory gives Huron a 6-2 overall mark heading in to the break.

“It’s been really intense in practice during the past month, so the break will do us good,” McCarty said.

The Tigers will now be off until Jan. 4, when they travel to face Brandon Valley in a dual. Huron will follow that with the Brandon Valley Invitational on Jan. 5.
