HURON — Harry A. Becker, age 89, of Huron, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2012, at the SunQuest Health Care Center. His funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2nd, at Bethesda Church with Rev. Roy Burket officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery. Harry A. Becker was born June 13, 1923, to Abraham B. and Helena (Buller) Becker at Chinook, Montana. At an early age, the family moved to South Dakota and settled in the Blunt and Onida areas of Sully County. He received his elementary education in this area. As a young man, Harry worked as a farm laborer for several years. He worked for Tucks Café in Huron and then Tucks in Watertown. He also worked in Sioux Falls at the Sport Bowl bowling alley.
On Jan. 2, 1945, Harry married Marie Gross of Huron at Mitchell. He began working for Armour and Company Oct. 21, 1946, and worked there for 37 years. He built a number of houses during this time. Harry took early retirement on July 8, 1983, when the Armour plant closed. Harry and Marie enjoyed their retirement years and continued living in the home Harry had built 1 3/4 miles south of Huron.
Harry accepted the Lord Jesus Christ in his life on April 1, 1948. He was baptized Aug. 14, 1949, and was a member of the Bethesda Church.
Harry and Marie celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Jan. 2, 1995. On Oct. 13, 1997, Marie passed away from a brain tumor.
On Feb. 27, 1999, Harry married Kathryn Fast of Sioux Falls. In September 2005, Harry was diagnosed with lymphoma cancer.
Harry enjoyed carpentry work, taking care of his yard, listening to Gaither gospel music and visiting with family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marie; an infant grandson, Adam Becker; three sisters, Bertha Becker, Ida (Jake) Pullman and Olga (Wesley) Koehn; and five brothers, Elmer, Abraham, Arthur, Walter and Wilbert.
Survivors include his daughter, Marsha (Rod) Gross of Huron; his son, Mark (Laronda) Becker of Waterloo, Iowa; four grandchildren, Scott Gross, Angela (Dane) Pfamatter, Genae Becker and Daniel Becker; a great-grandson, Justin Gross; a brother, Lewis (Verna) Becker of Huron; a half-brother, Jim Becker of Sun City, Arizona; and a half-sister, Carol Campbell of Huron.
