HURON ó The Huron Tiger boysí basketball team let a 37-32 third quarter lead slip away over the final eight minutes of play and missed a shot at the buzzer to force overtime, as Yankton (1-4) picked up its first victory of the season 46-43.
With the fourth quarter under way junior Justin Decker scored to put the Tigers up seven points.
Unfortunately, for Huron (4-2) they would score just four point the rest of the game as Yankton would answer with 14 of their own.
In fact, the Tigers would lead by seven 43-36 after Alex Kopfmann grabbed an offensive rebound but the Bucks just converted on more opportunities down the stretch and with under two minutes to play J.J. Heyna was fouled by Decker (his forth) and hit a jumper to give Yankton a 44-41 lead they would not relinquish.
Tiger senior Adam Zwanziger answered with around a minute left to play to cut the Bucks advantage to a single point 44-43 but its last timeout, Yankton got the ball to Micheal Rucker, who scored on drive to put Yankton back on top by three with less than 30 seconds to play.
The Tigers got a shot off that missed the mark on the next trip down the court and Decker picked up his fifth foul sending Hejna to the line to shoot a one-and-one with under 10 seconds to play.
Hejna missed the first foul shot and the Tigers did get the ball up the court for a tying three-point try but it bounced off the rim handing the Tigers their second loss of the year and Yanktonís first victory.
Both teamís showed the rust of the first game back from the holiday break as Huron, which hadnít played for 16 days, shot just 36.4 percent from the field and was just 3-14 from three-point range.
Likewise the Bucks shot just 37.4 from the field and were just 2-11 from long range.
Both teams shot an identical 8-of-13 from the line but in the second half the Tigers shot just three free throws compared to eight for Yankton.
Hejna finished with a game-high 18 points while the Tigers were led by the trio of Caleb Carr who had 12 points including a pair of three-pointers, Zwanziger who had 10 (going 6-for-8 from the line) and Decker who had nine.
Both Rucker and Brady Hale had seven points for Yankton.
The Bucks outrebounded the Tigers 35-30 as Hejna pulled down nine of them, while Zwanziger led the Tigers with 12. Both players had five offensive rebounds.
Tiger head coach Tim Buddenhagen said his team just didnít match the intensity that the Bucks came out and played with.
The Tigers will get their next chance to pick up a victory in 2013 tonight when they travel to Sioux Falls Washington (2-4) which lost 41-23 Thursday night to South Sioux City (Neb.).
Yankton defeated Huron 54-46. Tate Sporrer led the Tigers with 11 points, while Kaison Thies added 10 points. Hayden Busch had four rebounds.
Yankton cruised to a 54-31 win against the Huron sophomores. Thies led the Tigers with 12 points, while Trey Moeding added eight points and had six rebounds.
