URBANDALE, Iowa ó Eugene Raymond Porter, 85, died Wednesday, Jan.9, 2013, at Karen Acres Health Care Center in Urbandale from complications of Parkinsonís disease.†
The funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Ann Catholic Church in Miller. Burial will follow in St. Ann Catholic Cemetery at Miller. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service.
Eugene Raymond Porter was born Jan. 6, 1928, to Raymond and Irene (Matson) Porter at Miller. He grew up on a farm in Greenleaf Township. He graduated from Miller High School in 1946 and farmed with his father. He served in the Army at Fort Campbell, Ky., from 1953 to 1955.
He married Mary Ellen Rudd in 1955. After the family farm was sold, he bought the St. Lawrence Blacksmith Shop and they moved to St. Lawrence in 1964. He retired from blacksmithing in 1998 and worked at the Porter Sculpture Park in Montrose during the summers. He met many interesting people from all over the nation and other countries and enjoyed talking to them. He moved to Urbandale two and a half years ago when his health declined.
He is survived by three sons, David (Delia) of Rochester, N.Y., Wayne of St. Lawrence and Ron (Liana) of Plymouth, Minn.; two daughters, Audrey (Steven) Bailin of Urbandale and Kathy (Jay) Kornder of Fort Dodge, Iowa; and 12 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 2003.
