HURON — A $3,200 Community Foundation grant from the Canadian Pacific Railroad will allow the Huron Police Department to implement a bicycle patrol program in the city.
The department will purchase and equip two specialized bicycles and outfit officers with proper safety equipment and apparel. Officers working bike patrols will be required to attend a certification course this spring by South Dakota Law Enforcement Training in Pierre.
Bike patrols will mainly be used at community events and to put officers into areas difficult to patrol by vehicles such as parks, walking trails, Splash Central, downtown businesses, the state fairgrounds and lake and river access points, said public information officer Brandon Neitzert.
The patrols should offer increased police presence and response capability throughout the community, he said. For the complete article see the 01-12-2013 issue.
