No. 5 Pierre rallies for win against Huron boys

Posted: Monday, Jan 14th, 2013

PIERRE — The Huron Tigers couldn’t hold a seven-point halftime lead Thursday night, as the Governors of Pierre erased the deficit in the third quarter to take a 12-point lead, 43-31 and cruised to a 64-49 win.

Going into the locker room Tiger head coach Tim Buddenhagen was pleased with his team’s first half execution.

“The key to the good start was execution and patience on offense, being physical and limiting Pierre to one shot,” said Buddenhagen. “The key is we needed to make more shots in the second half so we could set up our offense.”

The game turned on the 23-4 run Pierre made in the third quarter and was led by Lane Severyn who scored the first seven points of the third quarter to tie the game at 27 and the Governors followed his lead as he scored 33 points on 9-of-20 shooting including four three-pointers and going 11-for-16 from the free-throw line.

“Pierre was able to get off to a good start in the second half and gained confidence,” said Buddenhagen.  “They have two all-staters; eventually they are going to get going.”

Zach Hanson finished with 13 points and eight rebounds to help lead the Governors.

The Tigers got a great effort from senior Adam Zwanziger who scored 25 points including an eight for nine effort from the line and a pair of three-pointers.

“Adam had a great night!  He strapped us on his back and everything he could do to help us win.  I am proud of the way he played,” said Buddenhagen.

But Huron just couldn’t get any baskets to fall from anyone else to join him in double figures, as outside of Zwanziger’s 8-for-19 shooting from the field, the Tigers were just 8-for-30.

“You cannot control if the ball goes in the basket,” said Buddenhagen. “You can only control your effort and attitude.”

And the effort was there for the Tigers as Buddenhagen cited James White’s performance.

“James White stepped up and gave us a tremendous amount of energy off the bench,” said Buddenhagen.

“I was proud of our guys’ effort last night. We played physical on defense, limited Pierre to 38 shots and they only got three offensive rebounds.  We were able to get off 59 shots and had seven offensive rebounds.”  The Tigers did force 28 turnovers, five more than they committed and had 15 steals with Will Carr collecting four of them.

“Now our execution has to improve.  I was more concerned about the effort this week and that definitely picked up,” said Buddenhagen.

Defensively, he wants the Tigers to force opponents into tougher shots.

“We have to play better defense and communicate better on the defensive end to eliminate some of the easy baskets we gave them in the second half,” said Buddenhagen.

The Tigers (5-3) still plan to play Saturday in a boys’ and girls’ doubleheader at Brandon Valley, although the teams will look at travel conditions Saturday mornings.
