City and SDSU plan landscape architecture program

Posted: Thursday, Jan 17th, 2013

HURON In a third ongoing collaboration with South Dakota State University students, the city of Huron is benefiting from a landscape architecture program this spring that is designed to lead to strategies for managing growth and improving walkability and active transportation in the community.

City Planner Ralph Borkowski told the City Commission Monday that landscape architecture students and their instructor will begin the project with a Jan. 24-25 visit to meet with key stakeholders and community members.

The stakeholder meeting is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Jan. 24 in the Kerr Community Room at the Campus Center. The room will also be the home base for the project.

Don Burger, assistant professor in the landscape architecture program, is asking that representatives from the community attend the meeting.

Students will conduct assessments on existing transportation infrastructure, including roads, walks, parks, transit and other factors that impact active transportation.

They will return to their classroom to develop strategies and recommendations for improvements.

Their findings will be compiled into a series of documents and drawings that will be presented to the community at the end of the spring semester.

SDSU architecture students are working on plans to improve the downtown area, while SDSU nursing students are involved in a wellness initiative in Huron.
