SBA boys, Hitchcock-Tulare girls claim consolation titles in 281

HURON — Brian LaDue scored 19 points and had eight rebounds to lead Sunshine Bible Academy to a 64-43 win Thursday over Highmore-Harrold in the fifth-place game of the boys’ 281 Conference Tournament played at Huron Arena.

It was a tight game early on, tied 14-14 after the end of the first quarter after Colin Weidenbach hit two 3-pointers for Highmore-Harrold. But Sunshine Bible would outscore the Pirates by four in the second quarter to take a 25-21 lead into halftime. LaDue, the 6-foot-3 junior from SBA, turned it on in the second half, scoring 11 of his game-high 19 in the final two frames. Senior forward Brady Brockel scored 14 and had 10 rebounds, while Daniel Pedersen added 10 points for SBA.

Highmore-Harrold hit nine 3-pointers on the night, led by Weidenbach who hit four shots from beyond the arc. Weidenbach finished with 12 points. Brady LaMont scored nine and Hadley Hamlin eight for the Pirates.

Highmore-Harrold returns to Huron Jan. 22 to take on James Valley Christian at the JVC gym. Sunshine Bible will host Kimball-White Lake Jan. 22.

Hitchcock-Tulare 50, SBA 31

HURON — Hitchcock-Tulare had three players score in double figures in a 50-31 win over Sunshine Bible Academy Thursday to claim fifth place in the girls’ 281 Conference Tournament.

Molly Koester scored a team-high 13 points while Cassie Binger and Paige Binger scored 10 points apiece to lead Hitchcock-Tulare.

Sunshine Bible was led by Tricia Wilken who scored a game-high 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Sarah Pedersen scored nine points and Rebekah Konechne had 12 rebounds on the night.

It was a tight game early. Hitchcock-Tulare led 9-5 after the first quarter and took a slim 18-16 lead into halftime. But the Lady Patriots blew it open in the second half. They outscored Sunshine Bible 13-10 in the third quarter and 19-5 in the fourth to cruise to the win.

Hitchcock-Tulare gets back to action tonight as they travel to Onida to take on Sully Buttes. Sunshine Bible plays Wolsey-Wessington Jan. 22 at Wolsey.
