HURON — Using a strong second half, the Huron boys’ basketball team pulled away for a 61-39 victory against the Mitchell Kernels on Tuesday at Huron Arena.

The Tigers, who moved back into the Class AA rankings this week at No. 3, started slow but were able to put things together for a 12-11 lead at the end of the opening quarter.

Justin Decker had the first two points for Huron on an alley-oop dunk. After that the Tigers struggled to find the basket until JP Noonan heated up from the perimeter and drained a pair of 3-pointers to highlight the rally.

In a game, which featured shooting, the Tigers converted on 11 of 19 shots in the opening half for 58 percent from the field.

With Mitchell collapsing its defense to contain Decker and Adam Zwanziger on the inside, Huron’s perimeter shooters were able to fire away. The Tigers would build a 29-22 advantage at the half.

Huron was able to inflict a majority of its damage during the third quarter, when its defensive unit held the Kernels to just nine points during eight minutes of play.

Huron amassed 19 points in the third quarter to stretch its lead to 17 points at 48-31.

The Tigers were able to improve on their shooting percentage from the field during the second half by converting on 15 of 24 shots for 62.5 percent.

Caleb Carr, who had a dunk on a breakaway in the second half, led Huron with 18 points. Noonan, who finished with a trio of 3-pointers, had 15 points, while Decker added nine points.

Zwanziger snagged a team-high nine rebounds for the Tigers and had a pair of steals, while Will Carr recorded four assists.

Beau Brown was the lone player to reach double figures for Mitchell, with 18 points.

Both teams combined to shoot just five free throws in the game.

Huron, which is now 9-3 overall and 5-3 in the Eastern South Dakota Conference, will travel to face No. 4-ranked Watertown at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Mitchell (3-10, 1-8) will play at No. 5-ranked Brookings on Tuesday.
