HURON — Allen R. Schroeder, 76, of Huron, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, at his home.
His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Welter Funeral Home in Huron with burial at Restlawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery and military honors by the Huron Veterans Council.
Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. today at Welter Funeral Home with his family present from 6 to 8 p.m.; or one hour prior to the service. Visit welterfuneralhome.com.
Allen Ray Schroeder was born March 20, 1936, in Lane to Clarence and Katherine (Holtz) Schroeder. He attended school in Sanborn County country school. He joined the South Dakota National Guard, serving two enlistments between 1958 and 1976.
He married Rose Marie Pedersen at American Lutheran Church in Huron on Oct. 11, 1959. He worked numerous farm, grocery store, truck stop and construction jobs. He went to work for Edward’s Linoleum in 1953 and worked there until 1970 when he and his brother purchased the business, changing the name to Schroeder Bros. Floor Covering. He was a volunteer firefighter, starting in 1958. He became a full-time fireman in 1976, retiring in 2001. He was also an EMT until March 2006. After his retirement as a fireman, he began working at Our Home Inc. doing maintenance.
He enjoyed camping, fishing, and trap shooting.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Rose Marie Schroeder of Huron; four children, Chad A. Schroeder, Kelly M. Bales, Cody Schroeder and Corey Bales, all of Huron; one great-grandchild; a brother, Leon (Rosanne) Schroeder of Huron; and several nieces and nephews.
