HURON – Lindsey Brewer of Huron is among 10 South Dakota elementary and secondary school teachers who have joined nearly 5,000 others across the country in achieving National Board Certification in 2012.

It raises the number of National Board Certified teachers in South Dakota to 99.

Brewer is a mathematic

/adolescence and young adulthood teacher at the High School in the Huron Public School District.

“These teachers deserve our congratulations,” said South Dakota Secretary of Education Dr. Melody Schopp.

“National Board Certification is a rigorous and comprehensive process,” she said. “Those who achieve it demonstrate not only a commitment to student learning, but also a commitment to their own growth as teaching professionals.

Others in South Dakota to achieve certification in 2012 are from Rapid City, Todd County, Shannon County, Andes Central, Belle Fourche and Groton.

The certification process takes one to three years to complete. While licensing standards set the basic requirements to teach in a state, National Board Certified teachers demonstrate advanced teaching knowledge, skills and practices similar to the certification earned by experts in law and medicine.
