Posted: Wednesday, Jan 30th, 2013

Seven individuals with a combined service of 370 years, were recognized for their long-time service to local government at the 33rd annual South Dakota Association of Towns and Townships meeting in Huron.

Those recognized from the heartland region include Harlan Mentzel of Theresa Township in Beadle County who served as treasurer for 43 years; and Rolland Barrie of Turton Township in Spink County who has been the clerk since 1964. Barrie also helps watch over township roads and was key in helping during the spring flooding of the township.

Mentzel and his wife, Alice, have lived in the Huron area for the last 50 years, have three children and are semi-retired but still raise cattle and maintain their farm acreage.

Those who have served 40 years or more and have not previously been recognized, may be nominated for the annual award program.
