SIOUX FALLS — Leona “Lee” Griffin, 92, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013, at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls.
Her funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Sioux Falls with burial at 1p.m. in Rosehill Cemetery in Parker.
Visitation will begin at 12 p.m. Friday at Miller Funeral Home in Sioux Falls, with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. and a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Visit www.millerfh.com.
Leona “Lee” Schmidt was born Feb. 20, 1920, in Marion to Henry A. and Nettie (Duerksen) Schmidt. After schooling she began work.
On June 17, 1946, she married Emmett Griffin in Parker. Her husband died Sept. 26, 1984.
She volunteered at the Sioux Falls Va. Hospital, spending thousands of hours over a span of 20 years with the cancer patients. She also enjoyed playing cards and hunting.
Survivors included five sisters, Norma Sherard of Tualatin, Ore., Alma (Alvin) Heckel of Huron; Grace (Charles) Stratton of Parker; Adella “Della” (Alvin) Fogelman of Sioux Falls; Blondie Ferguson of Hummelstown, Pa.; a brother, Raymond (Lori) Schmidt of Oklahoma; and a sister-in-law, Phyllis Schmidt of Parker.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Nettie; her husband, Emmett; a sister, Alvina Poppe; and three brothers, Harry, Calvin, and (infant) Otto Schmidt.For the complete article see the 01-30-2013 issue.
