HURON — The James Valley Christian Lady Vikings defeated the Hitchcock-Tulare Lady Patriots 69-64 at the JVC gym on Tuesday evening.

Both teams started off slow offensively, with the Lady Vikings leading 14 to 8 at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Patriots were slow to get back on defense and committed a number of fouls in the first two quarters, which led to their starters being in foul trouble early in the game. The Lady Vikings missed some free-throw opportunities early, helping the Lady Patriots to stay in it, 29-25 at the half.

But the Lady Patriots came out of the locker room determined that they shouldn’t be counted out just yet. They went on an 18-2 run to dominate the majority of the third quarter.

Knippling scored a 3-pointer to make it 29-28, then Hannah Loban answered back with a deuce, but Knippling scored a 3-pointer and Barrie a 3-pointer, to make the score 34-31 Lady Patriots. Then Knippling snatched up a steal and drove it in for a layup, to give her team a five-point edge, 36-31. Paige Binger contributed a basket, then Barrie hit yet another 3-pointer. Knippling made another steal and Paige Binger got another layup to make the score 43-31.

But the Lady Vikings answered back, with Anna Ulvestad hitting a key 3-pointer, followed by Tara Nihart sinking a 3-pointer as well to make it 47-39. After that, the Lady Vikings’ strategy was to drive in to the basket for layups, and try to draw as many fouls as possible.

“Driving it all the way in was our main strategy to catch up, because they weren’t really doing any help defense and cutting it off,” said Lady Vikings’ head coach Tim Nihart. “But we did cut it close, because we had problems not making the layups at times. That was frustrating for our girls.”

Their strategy worked, and the fourth quarter became a free-throw game, which is how the Lady Vikings were able to surpass the Lady Patriots. “Hitchcock-Tulare had some lights-out shooting and I was really pleased how we were able to hang in there until it turned offensively for us,” said Nihart. “It was a good night.”

Lady Patriots head coach Jaime McGillvrey said her team worked very hard. “They made some little mistakes, but overall they should have been able to come up with a win.”

Leading scorers for the Lady Patriots were Barrie with 14, Molly Koester with 12 and Paige Binger with 12. Leading the rebounding effort was Paige Binger with 6. Leading scorers for the Lady Vikings were Jaclyn Loban with 26, Tara Nihart with 16 and Hannah Loban with 14. Betsy Nelson led the Lady Vikings in rebounds with 12.
