MITCHELL – The Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team added a fourth name to its 2014 roster this week when head coach Steve Gust announced Hartman Katz had committed to the Tiger baseball program.
Katz, a catcher, will be a freshman for DWU in 2014. The Huron native played high school baseball for the Huron Tigers and also played three years of Legion baseball for Huron Legion Post 7. The 5-foot-10 righty also lettered five times in wrestling and three each in track and football at Huron High School.
Katz finished runner-up at 160 pounds at the Class A state wrestling meet as a junior and is a two-time All-Eastern South Dakota Conference wrestler. He also earned All-ESD honors as a defensive back in football this season. Katz is a member of the National Honor Society.
“Hartman is not only a solid baseball player, but a great student as well,” Gust said. “On the field he has the tool necessary to succeed as a catcher. He is hard working, tough as nails and has good skills. Needless to say, we’re pleased to have Hartman join our program.”
Katz joins Ben Spitznagel (SS, Cincinnati, Ohio); William Lutjen (INF/OF, Miller Place, N.Y.) and Zach Uttecht (SS/2B, Pierce, Neb.) as the Tigers’ first signees for 2014. Dakota Wesleyan starts its 2013 season Friday, Feb. 8, when it takes on Montana State University Billings at 4:30 p.m. at the Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn.
