The Huron High School Debate and Interp Team won the Central Forensic Conference Champion-ship on Feb. 2 at Brandon Valley High School.

This is the team’s third CFC Championship in a row, and it extends Huron High School’s streak of first- or second-place finishes in the CFC to 27 straight years.

During this streak, HHS has earned first place 17 times.

“The coaching staff is extremely proud of this team. Its been a long conference season. This team pulled together to hold a slim conference lead and win by the slimmest of margins — 1 point,” head coach Mitch Gaffer said. “One debate round lost instead of won or one interp round turning out differently and this would have been a different outcome.”

Final CFC standings were Huron with 291 points; Yankton, 290 points; Vermillion, 272 points; Mitchell, 246 points; Sioux Falls O’Gorman, 231 points; Sioux Falls Washington, 228 points; Lennox, 185 points; Harrisburg, 119 points; Sioux Falls Roosevelt, 101 points; and Brandon Valley, 93 points.

“Our compliments go to Yankton High School, and Head Coach Leo Kallis,” Gaffer said. “They have a strong team and made for a competitive season all year.”

Top finishers for Huron at the final CFC Tournament were:

• In Duet Interp, Maddy Klein and Maddy Gohn placed first, Ben Halbkat and Troy Berg placed second, and Jacklyn Rogers and Becca Langbehn placed third.

• In Humorous Interp, Paul Christenson placed first and Julianna Wallenstein placed fourth.

• In Dramatic Interp, Maddy Klein placed fourth.

• In Varsity Oratory, Sarahi Luna placed second.

• In Novice Oratory, Karina Ward placed third.

• In Novice Public Forum Debate, Ben Brown and Dylan Stahly went 3-1 and placed fourth.

“Again, the team was anchored at this CFC tournament by our individual event students. Strong interp performances especially, which captured all three Duet Interp trophies, and first place in three of the three interp divisions. Assistant coaches Angie Klein and Laura Hoek are to be commended for developing a strong interp entry for Huron High School.”

The next tournament for the team is the Northern South Dakota National Qualifying Tournament in Watertown on Feb. 15-16. Top finishers at this tournament qualify to the National Speech and Debate Tournament held in Birmingham, Ala., in June.
