Huron gymnasts establish new school record

Posted: Monday, Feb 11th, 2013

MITCHELL — Less than a week after establishing a new Huron High School record, the Huron gymnastics team raised the bar a little higher on Thursday during a dual against Mitchell.

The Tigers turned in a new all-time high team score of 139.5 on Thursday to eclipse the record-setting performance it had on Saturday during the Eastern South Dakota Conference Meet.

“We are peaking at the right time. The girls are doing a terrific job,” Huron coach Julie King said.

“We had an amazing beam night to go along with our solid floor routines,” she said. “We threw in some new skills tonight and the girls did a tremendous job with those.”

Despite coming up with the new school record, Huron fell shy of the 144.1 performance that Mitchell used to win the dual competition.

The Kernels had the top three finishers in the all-around, with Quinci Herll leading the way with a 37.250. Rebecca Sadler was second at 35.850, followed by Ellie Rew at 35.500.

Huron occupied the next three spots in the all around, with Kelsey King posting a 34.750 for fourth. Hailey McCune was fifth at 34.400, followed by Jordan Waldner at 34.050.

The Tigers had three of the top five finishers on the beam, with King using a 9.35 to claim second just .05 away from the top score. Jordan Waldner was second at 9.3, followed by Jessica Waldner at 9.2.

McCune was second for Huron on the vault with a 9.1, while Alex Wilde was seventh with an 8.8.

Jessica Waldner used a 9.05 to finish tied for fourth for the Tigers in the floor exercise, while King shared the fifth spot with a 9.0.

Tessa Musil was the top gymnasts for Huron on the bars with an 8.4 to finish fifth. Kelsey King and McCune shared the seventh spot with scores of 8.0, while Cassidee King was eighth at 7.95.

The Tigers will close their season at the state meet, which is scheduled Feb. 15-16 in Rapid City.
