Tigers earn win against Yankton

HURON — The Huron girls’ basketball team avenged an earlier loss against Yankton with a 48-43 victory on Thursday at Huron Arena.

The Tigers limited Yankton to just four points in each of the first two quarters to build a 25-12 lead at the half.

Huron converted on nine of 17 shots from the field in the opening half for 53 percent shooting and converted on three of eight shots from beyond the 3-point arc.

The Gazelles were able to outscore Huron in both the third and fourth quarters, but couldn’t erase the 13-point deficit they faced at the half.

Jacey Hupp had 11 points to lead a balanced attack for the Tigers, who improved to 3-14 overall and 3-8 in the Eastern South Dakota Conference. Jazmin Newton had nine points, while Bailey Rathjen had seven points and Sarah Carr and Katelyn Allerdings each had six points.

Huron held a 35-30 advantage on the boards, with Allerdings pulling down a team-high 11 rebounds. She also had three assists.

Morgan Tessier and Mikala Hora led the Gazelles, who are now 3-11 and 3-7 in the ESD, with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Kelsey Fitzgerald had nine rebounds.

Both teams will return to action against Brandon Valley. Yankton travels to play Brandon Valley today, while Huron will host Brandon Valley on Saturday at 5:45 p.m. as part of a doubleheader at Huron Arena.
