HURON — The Nordby Center for Recreation, located at 1700 Lincoln Ave S.W., is hosting a “Zumbathon” event on Saturday, Feb. 16 from 10 a.m. to noon. The event is free to the public and ages 14 and up are welcome to join the Latin-inspired, calorie-burning dance fitness party known as Zumba.

“We have the best Zumba instructors in the Huron area,” said Nordby Center director Shelly Buddenhagen. Assistant director Chris Haberling says Zumba is a great cardio workout. “February is heart-healthy month, so we really want to promote fitness through our free Zumbathon event.”

While the Zumbathon is free to the public, the Nordby Center currently offers Zumba classes to all members. The classes are Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:15 to 7 p.m. and the Aqua-Zumba classes are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 8:45 a.m.

“Zumba has become the most popular exercise program in the world, and we decided to start doing classes here at the Nordby two years ago,” said Haberling. “It is similar to doing lunges and squats, but in a way that’s more fun. Zumba strengthens the lower body and core.”

Jill Nihart, Vicky North and Mary Dunn are all certified Zumba instructors. Dunn also instructs Aqua-Zumba, which is Zumba in the pool.

“Zumba is for all fitness levels,” said Nihart. “And all of the moves are adaptable.” Anybody can do it, said North. “The moves are simple and we only have 3 to 5 moves in each song,” she said. “We have so much fun that it’s easy to forget we are exercising,” added North.

Nihart said Zumba is a fun way to do a workout in a group setting. “It’s really about the fellowship,” she said.

To join them for Zumbathon, 45 minutes of burning “tons of calories” get to Zumbathon on Saturday, Feb. 16 starting at 10 a.m. For more information call the Nordby Center for Recreation at 352, 2627.
