Maga Ta-hohpi to host Winter Fest Feb. 24

Posted: Monday, Feb 18th, 2013

HURON — On Sunday, February 24 join the Friends of Maga Ta-Hohpi for Winter Fest, an afternoon of wildlife tracking, snowshoeing and fun in the snow. The event will start at 1 p.m. and wrap up at 4 p.m. at the Maga Ta-Hohpi Waterfowl Production Area located on 392nd Avenue (eight miles west of Huron on Hwy 14).

Frank Amundson, president of the Friends of Maga Ta-Hohpi, says the group will venture out on snowshoes to track winter wildlife, identify tracks, learn how South Dakota’s hardiest wildlife survive the winter, make a bird seed ornament to feed winter birds and indulge in some hot chocolate. There will be games and a scavenger hunt as well.

“People that come will be amazed to find out that there’s a whole world going on underneath the snow at the Waterfowl Production Area,” said Amundson.

Amundson advises all who attend to dress appropriately in layers. “Bring hats, gloves, sunglasses and snow boots.”

“Winter offers a whole new way to enjoy South Dakota,” he said. “It offers many different opportunities for family fun and fitness.”

Enhance your experience with a camera, water-bottle, and bring snowshoes if you have them.

Participants under the age of 18 must be with an adult.

To RSVP by February 20, contact Amundson at 352-5638 or online at friendsofmagatahohpi.com.

The event is sponsored by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and the Friends of Maga Ta-Hohpi. March 3 will be an alternate date in case of adverse weather.
