Area wrestlers set for Class B tourney

ABERDEEN — Eighteen area wrestlers have qualified to compete in the Class B State Wrestling Tournament, which begins today at 10 a.m. and ends Saturday at the Barnett Center in Aberdeen.

Clark-Willow Lake will have six participants, including a pair of return place winners from a year ago.

Senior Logan Tonak finished tied for fifth last year for the Cyclones. He brings a 34-1 record into this year’s tournament at 220 pounds. Junior Jakob Weisbrod was fourth last year and is 36-1 this season at 132.

Others qualifying to compete at the state tourney for Clark-Willow Lake, include sophomore Kane LaPlante, who is 18-17 at 138; freshman Kevin Schuelke, who is 23-23 at 145; eighth-grader Jess Karber, who is 32-12 at 120; and seventh-grader Wyatt Burke, who is 26-17 at 126.

Senior Eugene Martin will be returning to defend his state championship for Kingsbury County, which has a total of four wrestlers qualified to compete.

Martin has gone 42-1 this season for the Knights at 195. Others competing for Kingsbury County are senior Austin Gilbertson, who is 34-9 at 120; senior Evan Larson, who is 36-8 at 182; and sophomore Brody Harkness, who is 33-20 at 106.

Redfield-Doland is also sending four wrestlers to the state tournament, including junior Cody Friese, who was eighth last year.

Friese is 30-7 this season at 220. Others in the state tournament field for the Pheasants are junior Tyler Masat, who is 30-9 at 182; sophomore Brett Christman, who is 18-11 at 195; and sophomore Ryan Yost, who is 25-13 at 160.

Leading a trio of wrestlers into the state tournament for Miller/Highmore-Harrold is senior Michael Weidenbach, who finished sixth a year ago. He is 33-2 entering this year’s tournament at 120.

Eighth-grader JC Forman went 29-7 this season for the Bandits at 106 and eigth-grader Marshall Johnson was 15-11 at 220.

Also qualifying for this year’s state tournament was senior Tayte Clark of Sunshine Bible Academy. He was 31-10 this season at 138.
