WATERTOWN — The Huron Tigers are set to make another run at a championship during the Class A State Wrestling Tournament, which begins at 10 a.m. today and concludes on Saturday at the Watertown Civic Arena.

“Our goal is to be state champions,” Huron coach Dan McCarty said. “We know that Pierre and Rapid City Central are favored to win, but we are competitors. We are not going to back down to them just because they are favored. We are going to wrestle to win this thing.”

The Tigers have 11 wrestlers qualified to compete in the state tourney, including five who earned placings at last year’s state tourney.

Seniors Reagan Francom, Matt Halter and Hartman Katz were all second for Huron last year. Francom brings a 36-4 record into this year’s event at 160 pounds, while Halter is 14-2 at 285 after being sidelined much of the season recovering from a knee injury that he had surgically repaired and Katz turned in a 36-7 mark at 152.

The other turning place winners for the Tigers are juniors Wyatt Shillingstad and Chet Glanzer, who were fifth and sixth, respectively, a year ago. Shillingstad carries a 29-9 mark into this year’s event at 113, while Glanzer has gone 32-6 at 126.

Dustin French is the other senior qualified to compete in this year’s tourney for the Tigers. He has posted a 31-11 mark at 195.

Juniors Arthur Hines, Connor Gose and Tyler Kleinsasser will compete in the season-ending event for Huron. Hines is 4-10 this season at 145, while Gose is 17-17 at 170 and Kleinsasser is 34-11 at 182.

Rounding out the list of competitors for the Tigers will be eighth-graders Trent Francom and Nick Christensen, who will both be making their first trips to state. Francom posted a 21-19 record at 106 this season, while Christensen was 15-25 at 138.

Huron challenged for a state title a year ago, before finishing as the runner-up in the final team standings to Pierre. McCarty is expecting his squad to make another push for the top spot at this year’s event.

“We have to wrestle to our abilities,” he said. “We have some fantastic wrestlers on our team and if we wrestle to our abilities, we will be OK.”
