Area wrestlers reach semis in B

ABERDEEN — Senior Eugene Martin of Kingsbury County is on track to defend his state championship at the Class B State Wrestling Tournament at the Barnett Center in Aberdeen after the opening day on Friday.

Martin turned in back-to-back wins to reach the semifinals at 195 pounds for the Knights. Other area wrestlers duplicating the feat on Friday were junior Jakob Weisbrod and senior Logan Tonak of Clark-Willow Lake and junior Cody Friese of Redfield-Doland.

Martin opened the tournament with a pin at the 1:23 mark against Alec Dagel of Parkston and then recorded a 15-1 major decision against Witt Dobesh of St. Thomas More to reach today’s semifinals.

Marten will face Tad Reiner of McCook Central-Montrose in the semifinals

Weisbrod, a junior who was fourth last season for the Cyclones, decisioned Nick Dion of Wagner 3-0 in the first round at 132. He then pinned Colby Pierret of Garretson in 1:21 to reach the semifinals, where he will face Josh Manning of Beresford.

Tonak, a senior who has lost just once in 35 matches this season entering the tournament, recorded an 11-0 major decision against Blake Severson of Garretson in the opening round at 220. He then pinned Gavin Devreies of Philip Area in 3:29.

Tonak will meet Brody Peterson of Lemmon/McIntosh in the semifinals.

Friese, a junior who was eighth last year for the Pheasants, pinned Cade Larson of Stanley County at 3:53 in his opening match at 285 and then edged Dan Stibral of Scotland 5-3 in the quarterfinals.

Friese will face Tate Gress of Harding County in the semifinals today.

Senior Austin Gilbertson of Kingsbury County recorded a win in the opening round at 120, but suffered a setback in the quarterfinals. He rebounded with a win in the wrestlebacks.

Senior Evan Larsen of Kingsbury County also posted a victory in his opening match at 182, before suffering a setback in the quarterfinals. He won his next match to stay alive in the tournament.

Gilbertson and Larsen both assured themselves of a placing in this year’s event.

Sophomore Brody Harkness of Kingsbury County won his first match at 106, but lost back-to-back matches.

Senior Michael Weidenbach of Miller/Highmore-Harrold also won in the opening round, before suffering setbacks in his next two matches at 120.
