Huron qualifies three for semis in Class A

WATERTOWN — The Huron Tigers had three wrestlers with a shot at winning a state championship after the quarterfinals on Friday at the Class A State Tournament.

Recording back-to-back wins on the opening day of the two-day event for the Tigers were seniors Hartman Katz, Reagan Francom and Matt Halter.

Katz opened the tournament with a pin at the 1:25 mark of his match against Josh Goeman of Lennox at 152 pounds. He followed that up with a pin against Sean Mullenburg of Sioux Falls Roosevelt at 5:29 in the quarterfinals.

Katz will face Brett Bye of Vermillion in the semifinals today.

Francom needed a mere three minutes to reach the semifinals at 160. He pinned Noah Diamond of Rapid City Stevens in 1:32 during his opening match and then stopped his second match against Luke Reiter of Sioux Falls Washington at 1:36.

Francom will face Shane O’Connell of Rapid City Central today in the semifinals.

Halter had one of the quickest pins in the tournament during the opening round, when he defeated Jacob Harberger of Dell Rapids in 32 seconds at 285. He went on to pin Trey McFarland of Rapid City Stevens at 3:17 in the quarterfinals.

Halter will face Justin Behrend of Brookings in the semifinals today.

Ten of the 11 wrestlers Huron had qualified to compete in the state tourney won matches on Friday.

Also winning matches in the opening round for the Tigers were junior Wyatt Shillingstad at 113, junior Chet Glanzer at 126, junior Tyler Kleinsasser at 182; and senior Dustin French at 195. All four suffered setbacks in the quarterfinals, sending them into the wrestlebacks.

Eighth-grader Trent Francom at 106, eighth-grader Nick Christensen at 138 and junior Connor Gose at 170 all suffered losses in their first matches, but rebounded to win in the wrestlebacks to stay alive in the tournament for Huron.

Junior Arthur Hines at 145 was the lone wrestler for the Tigers to suffer back-to-back defeats in the double-elimination event.

Huron was fifth in the team standings after the opening round and moved up to third after the quarterfinals and first-round wrestlebacks.

Pierre amassed 72 points during the first two rounds to hold a slight edge over Rapid City Central for the top spot. The Cobblers had 71.50 points. The Tigers were third at 54, followed by Aberdeen Central at 53.50. Spearfish/Lead-Deadwood and Sturgis shared the fifth spot at 47.

The semifinals and third-round wrestlebacks will begin at 10 a.m. today, with the final round to follow at 3:45 p.m.
