ABERDEEN — Eugene Martin of Kingsbury County successfully defended his state championship on Saturday during the Class B State Wrestling Tournament at the Barnett Center in Aberdeen.
Martin used a 23-second pin against Tad Reiner of McCook Central-Montrose in the semifinals to reach the championship match at 195 pounds. He claimed his second consecutive state title with a 12-2 major decision against Chad Sjurson of Webster in the champoinship match.
Martin finished his senior season with a 46-1 record.
Senior Logan Tonak and junior Jakob Weisbrod reached the championship matches at 220 and 132, respectively, for Clark-Willow Lake. Both emerged with runner-up finishes.
Tonak pinned Brody Peterson of LMMC in the semifinals, but suffered a loss by pin by Brady Reiff of Parkston in 59 seconds during the title match.
Weisbrod decisioned Josh Manning of Beresford 5-0 in the semifinals, before being defeated 11-6 by Austin Oyen of Tri-Valley in the championship match.
Junior Cody Friese of Redfield-Doland finished fourth at 285 on Saturday.
Kingsbury County seniors Evan Larsen and Austin Gilbertson earned trips to the awards standing during their final trip to the state tourney. Larson was fifth at 182, while Gilbertson was eighth at 120.
Parkston won the team championship in Class B with 164 points, while Philip Area was second at 115. Wagner and Canton shared the third spot with 111 points each and Tri-Valley rounded out the top five with 84 points.
Clark-Willow Lake and Kingsbury County tied for the top area finisher with 43 points which was good enough for 14th-place.
Redfield-Doland finished with 14 points, Miller-Highmore-Harrold scored 3.5 points and Sunshine Bible Academy finished with 3 points.
