De Smet punches ticket to Class B state tournament

HAYTI — De Smet’s second win of the season against Oldham-Ramona/Rutland earned the Lady Bulldogs a trip to the Class B State Tournament.

De Smet, which was ranked No. 3 in the final Class B girls’ basketball poll of the season, recorded a 58-43 victory against the Raiders on Thursday in the Region 2B championship game at the Hamlin Education Center.

The Lady Bulldogs outscored Oldham-Ramona/Rutland 13-3 in the opening quarter and led 27-12 at the half.

Amanda Poppen had 15 points to lead three players in double figures for De Smet, which will carry a 22-1 record into the state tournament. Rylie Osthus and Grayson Gruenhagen had 12 and 11 points, respectively, while Taylor Schoenfelder added nine points.

Poppen also had a team-high nine rebounds to lead the Lady Bulldogs to a 30-21 advantage on the boards. Osthus recorded a pair of steals.

BreeAna Olson finished with a game-high 20 points and had five rebounds for the Raiders, who end the season at 16-7.

De Smet will now wait to see who its first-round opponent will be for the Class B state tournament, which begins Thursday at Huron Arena.
