Governors slip past Huron in 3AA

Posted: Monday, Mar 4th, 2013

PIERRE — The top-seeded Pierre Governors used an 11-0 run late in the fourth quarter to rally for a 49-48 victory against the Huron Tigers in the District 3AA championship game on Friday.

A basket by Caleb Carr gave the Tigers a 44-35 lead with just over two minutes to play, but momentum changed in quick fashion as the Governors scored 11-unanswered points in a matter of a minute to take at 46-44 lead with 1:20 to play.

Cody Honeywell started the rally with the second of his three 3-pointers. Lane Severyn connected on a 3-pointer during Pierre’s next possession and came up with a steal, which led to a layup for Zach Hanson to slice Huron’s advantage to 44-43.

Honeywell capped the run with his final 3-pointer to give the Governors at 46-44 advantage, which was their first lead in the game since leading 13-12.

JP Noonan regained a 47-46 advantage for the Tigers with a 3-pointer with 49 second to play.

Severyn evened things up with a free-throw, but Justin Decker was fouled on a putback during the ensuing possession and made one of two free throws to give Huron a 48-47 lead with 21 seconds to play.

Hanson used a jump shot to put Pierre back in front 49-48 with 12 seconds to play, leaving the Tigers one final chance at the victory.

A 3-pointer at the buzzer by Hayden Busch rattled in and out, allowing the Governors to escape with the victory.

“I thought we played a great game, but Pierre was just a little bit better tonight,” Huron coach Tim Buddenhagen said.

Hanson finished with 19 points for Pierre, while Severyn added 15 points.

Huron was led by Noonan with 11 points. Lucas Morrison and Decker added nine and eight points, respectively.

The Governors advance to the Class AA State Tournament, while the Tigers move into a region game against Sturgis or Douglas on Tuesday at Huron Arena. The winner of Tuesday’s game, which will start at 6 p.m., earns a spot in the state tournament field.
