Johnson to unveil whether he will seek re-election in next few weeks

Posted: Friday, Mar 15th, 2013

Sen. Tim Johnson, D-S.D., said Wednesday he will announce whether he intends to seek re-election in 2014 in the coming weeks.

Asked about his plans in a conference call with reporters, the three-term senator, who began his political career in the state Legislature, said he would announce it in March.

“That’s all I can say for now,” he said. “I have not made up my mind entirely.”

But finalizing his plans in the next few weeks would give himself or others in the Democratic Party plenty of time to gear up for the campaign, he said.

There has been speculation over whether Johnson’s son, Brendan, the U.S. attorney for the District of South Dakota, and former Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin might be considering entering the race.

Former Gov. Mike Rounds has already indicated he plans to run for the Senate on the Republican ticket.

Johnson, a Vermillion attorney before launching his political career, served in the state House from 1979 to 1987 and in the U.S. House from 1987 to 1997. He was then elected to the Senate by defeating then-Sen. Larry Pressler, R-S.D.
