HURON — The great thing about culture is that it can be experienced in many ways.

For those in the Heartland Region, Saturday’s Taste of Culture held at the Huron Campus Center should give those who attend various ways to experience the area’s rich culture.

The event is being hosted by the Lutheran Social Services Refugee and Immigration program and committee members which include Kathy Retzlaff, LSS Refugee & Immigration;  Cindy Niederbaumer, Huron Public Schools ESL Welcome Center; Peggy Woolridge and Erica Woodbury with the Huron Chamber & Visitors Bureau, Jill Luque, American Bank & Trust; Drew Anderson, Dakotaland Federal Credit Union; Oscar Luque, Dakota Provisions and United Way Heartland Region board and Rhonda Kludt, United Way Heartland Region.

The festivities will feature ethnic food and cultural entertainment as well as a silent auction featuring some very unique items made by the various cultures present at the event.

Rhonda Kludt, United Way Heartland Region executive director, says she expects that those attending the Huron Symphony performance later that evening could take in the Taste of Culture’s food and entertainment before the symphony takes the stage across the street at the Fine Art Center, located at Ninth Street and Ohio Avenue Southwest.

According to Kludt and Kathy Retzlaff, who is with Lutheran Social Services, there will be multiple ways to experience the cultures of those who make Huron the melting pot that it has become. The featured entertainment includes a band comprised of 10 people from Sioux Falls, a pair of young ladies performing a Nepali Dance, Karen dancers and Yada Music Group from Iglesia Alpha y Omega.

Dishes will include Asian, Guatemalan, Peruvian, Karen, Mexican, German and Italian.

The event will begin at 5 p.m. and run until 7:30 p.m. Tickets may be purchased individually or as a table for a discount.

Tickets may be purchased at American Bank & Trust, Dakotaland Federal Credit Union and the ESL Welcome Center in Huron Arena.

Some of the sponsors for the evening include Dakota Provisions, Holy Trinity Catholic Parish, Horizon Health Care, Huron Chamber & Visitors Bureau and Wal-Mart.
