Bernard G. “Bernie” Howard, 79, of Huron

HURON — Bernard G. “Bernie” Howard, 79, of Huron, died Saturday, March 23, 2013, at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls.  He will be cremated and there will be no visitation.  His memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 28, at the American Lutheran Church with the Rev. Steven Brandsrud officiating.  Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery.  The family prefers memorials to the Gideons International or the American Lutheran Church. Visit www.kuhlerfuneralhome.com.

Bernard “Bernie” Guy Howard was born Oct. 22, 1933, to Guy and Esther (Thorne) Howard at Wanblee.  Bernie attended schools in Rapid City, Onida and Huron, graduating from Huron High School in 1952.  He worked on the family farm while in high school and attended Huron College. 

Bernie worked in retail and was married to Linda Hayman.  They had four children.

He went to work for the Farm Oyl Company of St. Paul, Minn. as territory manager.  He traveled for the company for 35 years and enjoyed many friendships acquired through his sales, mainly with implement dealers.  He was honored by the Farm Oyl Company for being the Million Dollar salesman for three years in a row and was awarded all-expenses-paid trips to Maui, Hawaii each year.  He retired from the company and was again given an all-expenses paid trip to Maui as a gift.  He continued in sales work as a representative for waste oil furnaces. 

Bernie married Alyce Quale Geyerman on August 5, 1967.  They had one child. 

Bernie was active in the American Lutheran Church, serving on the parish council, as a communion assistant and ushering.  He was a member of the Gideons, the Noon Lions Club, RSVP, and Sons of Norway.  He and Alyce enjoyed traveling and visited the Holy Land, Egypt, France, Greece and Norway, as well as many states where his children lived.  He enjoyed boating, cars, and gardening and raised many fruits and vegetables.

He is survived by his children and grandchildren, Leslie Bjur, Joshua, Jeremy, Allison and Joseph of Yakima, Wash., Sally Leeson, Kara and Savanna of San Antonio, Texas, Mary (Denny) Woolheater, Michael and Courtney of Sioux Falls, Todd (Jill) Howard, Lauren and Bradlee of Rogers, Ark., and Billy (Mimi) Howard, Ari and Sadie of Seattle, Wash.; one brother, James Howard; three sisters, Vernita (Alvin) Nicholson, Barbara Voas, and Rita Meyer; and twelve great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Guy and Esther; one sister, Margaret Peterson; one sister-in-law, Kay Howard; and two brothers-in-law, Kenneth Voas and Alfred Meyer.
