ARLINGTON — Wilfrid Pickering, 96, of Arlington, died Wednesday, April 3, 2013, at the Brookings Hospital in Brookings. His funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 8, at the United Methodist Church in Arlington with burial at the Arlington Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Johnson-Henry Funeral Home in Arlington, or one hour prior to the service at the church.
Wilfrid Pickering was born on April 16, 1916, to William and Florence (Linton) Pickering on the family farm near Arlington.
He was confirmed in the United Methodist Church in Arlington where he served on committees and ushered.
He married Velma Larson on Dec. 10, 1941, at Brookings. He farmed and raised livestock his entire life near Arlington until 1972. He then was employed as a security guard at the 3M Company in Brookings until retiring in 1980.
He is survived by his children, Keith (Jane) Pickering of Balaton, Minn., Joyce Pickering of Brookings, Don Pickering of Arlington, Mary (Tom) Nemitz of Arlington, Deb (Paul) Courteau of Sioux Falls, Linda (David) McGirr of Huron; son-in-law, Dennis Johnson of Volga; brother, Harvey Pickering; 8 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Velma, June 2011; daughter, Nancy Johnson, Nov. 2009, five sisters, three brothers, a granddaughter and a great-grandson.For the complete article see the 04-06-2013 issue.
