HURON More than 80 youths in grades 3-6 have participated in the Air-It-Out Arena Football League, which is held at Bergman Arena in Huron.

The six-week program is designed to work hand in hand with the Junior Athletics Youth Football Program, which is held each fall in Huron.

Its a good way for us to work on skills for our fall program, said BJ McNeil, who was a driving force behind getting the spring program started. Its all about having fun.

McNeil, a Texas native, grew up playing spring football and felt it would be very beneficial to establish such a program here in Huron.

You see all those 7-on-7 drills and this is based off that, however we go 5-on-5 because of the numbers we have, he said.

The league meets twice a week, once for practice and then games are played on Saturdays.

Offensively, the teams work their way down the field with a quarterback and four receivers. The defensive unit consists of four defenders and a safety.

Its a good opportunity for kids to play football without the physical contact, McNeil said. It allows players to learn the quarterback position and run passing routes, along with some of the football terminology and skills needed to play those positions.

Many of the participants in the league are getting their first taste of the sport of football, according to Steve Gohn, who is another league organizer.

Were trying to give more kids the opportunity to play football, he said. We have more than 20 kids out who have never played football.

Registration information for the Junior Athletics Football Program, which is also open to youths in grades 3-6, will be forthcoming in the Huron Parks and Recreation Guide.
