LAKE PRESTON — Darlene Brekke, 79, of Lake Preston, died Tuesday, April 2, 2013, at her winter home in Mesa, Ariz.
Her memorial service will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the UCC/UMC Church in Lake Preston with the Rev. Steve C. Johnson officiating. A private burial will be held at a later date in the Lake Preston Cemetery.
Darlene Russett was born Jan. 2, 1934, at Hetland, to Bert and Gertrude (McNamara) Russett. She graduated from Lake Preston High School in 1952. She then attended Northern State College in Aberdeen.
She married Dale Brekke on Aug. 3, 1961, at Brookings and the couple lived on a farm south of Lake Preston. She worked at the bank in Lake Preston for 28 years. She started as a teller and advanced to Chief Operations Officer. She then worked at Boomer’s convenience store and continued to own and manage Su-Ra Apartments with her husband.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church where she was a member of the church board and Ladies’ Aid. For many years she had also been secretary-treasurer of the Lake Preston Cemetery Board.
She is survived by her husband, Dale, of Lake Preston, a daughter, Suzanne Brekke of Bellevue, Wash., a step-daughter Barbara Brekke of St Paul, Minn. and her three daughters and grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents and a brother John.
