WOONSOCKET — Gordon Kogel, 88, of Woonsocket, died Wednesday, April 24 at Prairie View Care Center in Woonsocket. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Wilfrid’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Jim Friedrich officiating. Burial will be in St. Wilfrid’s Cemetery with military rites by the Woonsocket American Legion. Visitation will be today from 5 to 8 at the Basham Funeral Home in Woonsocket with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.
He was born on April 18, 1925, at Lane, to Phillip and Mary (Burg) Kogel. He graduated from Lane High School in 1942.
He married Mary Jane Knigge on June 9, 1949, at Woonsocket. They then farmed near Lane and several locations in Illinois. Later he became the Director of Equalization for Jerauld County, then he was a bookkeeper at Sanborn County Telephone Company. In the 1970’s he joined Central State Insurance Company of Omaha, selling insurance until he retired.
He held leadership positions in the Lane Community Club, Sanborn County Commissioners, Woonsocket City Council, Knights of Columbus, Lions Club and the Boy Scouts. He was a member of St. Wilfrid’s Catholic Church.
He is survived by six children, Greg (Pat) Hight of Mitchell; Cliff of Wessington Springs; Valerie ( Jerry) Miller of Woonsocket, Melanie ( Mark) Fiegen of Roseville, Minn.; Hank of Fairview, Ill.; and Polly ( Duke) Hettinger, of Jackson, Wyo.; and many grandchildren, step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary, in 2003; five brothers and two sisters.For the complete article see the 04-26-2013 issue.
