HURON — A judge has sentenced Jordan Sylaart to jail after he pleaded guilty to one count of sexual contact with a minor.
The defendant had originally been charged with two counts of first-degree rape and was later indicted by a Beadle County grand jury.
Sylaart was given a three-year penitentiary term that was suspended. He was ordered to serve 90 days in jail and then be on probation for two years.
The Brown County State’s Attorney’s office handled the case after Beadle County State’s Attorney Mike Moore asked that his office be taken off of it.
Sylaart’s father, Fred, is charged with two counts of sexual contact with a child and his case is still pending. He is a former Beadle County employee.
The charges against the rural Cavour father and son stemmed from an investigation following allegations involving young girls attending the family’s day care in their home. Moore said the facility was licensed, but the Sylaarts closed it after the allegations surfaced. For the complete article see the 05-02-2013 issue.
