HURON — A 2012 task force that proposed legislation to try to reduce teen traffic crash injuries and deaths has been honored by South Dakota Voices for Children.
Task force member and Rep. Peggy Gibson, D-Huron, accepted the George S. Mickelson Policy Leader Award on behalf of the panel at a recent awards program in Sioux Falls.
The South Dakota Task Force on Teen Driving Safety was appointed to address the high teen death rate, one of the highest in the nation.
Judges, police officers, legislators, students and others served on the panel.
The task force came up with four bills, Gibson said.
One of them, banning new drivers from using hand-held devices while driving, was passed by the Legislature.
Others on the task force were co-chairs Sen. Craig Tieszen and Susan Randall, Nancy Allard, Lee Axdahl, Bob Clark, Staci Eggert, John Foster, Ken Franks, Cindy Gerber, Rich Greenwald, Steve Haney, Randy Hartley, Trevor Jones, Nick Moser, Terry Woster and Mark Swendsen.
