Huron ACT to hold auditions tonight for new show

Posted: Friday, May 10th, 2013

The Huron Area Community Theatre (HACT) will be holding auditions tonight from 6-8 p.m. a the Huron Fine Arts Center for the upcoming show “The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-The-Moon Marigolds.”

The cast will consist of two women and three girls, which is the first time the HACT has produced an all-female show.

Originally written in 1964 by Paul Zindel, the Pulitzer winning play depicts a young, quiet girl named “Tillie” who finds solace in science, and designs an experiment involving radioactive gamma rays and marigold flowers.

“The protagonist, Tillie, is one I think everyone will sympathize with and find relatable,” said Debson. “Tillie’s persistence and optimism are the light at the end of her tunnel.”

Her mother, Beatrice, is a single mother whose life has not gone the way she had hoped and projects those feelings onto her daughters in condescendingly abusive ways.

Tillie’s sister, Ruth, takes the mother’s side despite being subjected to the same abuse, and even uses Tillie as a scapegoat to win her mother’s affection. The “Nanny” is a non-speaking role, boards with the family, therefore endures Beatrice’s abuse as well. “Janice” is Tillie’s biggest competition at the science fair, whose morbid experiment proves darkly humorous.

Kristy Hubbard, who is on the Board of Directors for HACT, and Debson had been discussing and planning the show since last year.

“It has been about a year’s worth of progress, from deciding what show to perform to actually producing the show,” said Hubbard.

This particular play was chosen to be performed for both personal and logistical reasons. Debson said she performed cuts from the play during her childhood so being able to direct it today had nostalgic value for her.

“When we (Board of Directors) discussed the play, we realized it was a really good fit for what our budget and options could do,” said Hubbard.

“The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-The-Moon Marigolds” will be performed Aug. 9-11 and Aug. 16-18.

On July 20, the HACT will also host an “add-on” show accompanied by a dinner banquet and The Northern Fort Playhouse’s performance of “The Friendly Hour,” a play based on the actual minutes of a woman’s club in Beresford, South Dakota. The comedic play will portray the original members’ 70 years in the club.
